Cancún Weather in January

January is peak dry season in Cancún, and it shows: highs average 77.9°F, lows dip to a genuinely cool-for-the-tropics 71.6°F, and you'll only see rain on about 10 days across the month, usually as a quick passing shower rather than an all-day washout.

Humidity sits at 74%, the second-lowest reading of the year, so the heat feels manageable even at midday. Pack a light layer for evenings on the hotel zone's beachfront restaurants; the breeze off the Caribbean plus that 71°F low can feel genuinely chilly after sunset if you're used to Cancún's summer swelter.

The sea holds onto its warmth from the fall, 81.1°F on average, so swimming and snorkeling are comfortable from day one, no acclimating needed like you'd get in a temperate destination in January. Visibility on the reef tends to be at its best this time of year too, since calmer, drier weather means less runoff and sediment in the water.

This is also the most expensive and crowded month of the year alongside December: post-holiday travelers, snowbirds escaping northern winters, and the start of Cancún's winter high season all overlap. Book hotel-zone rooms and Chichen Itza or Isla Mujeres day trips well ahead.

Hurricane season officially ended two months ago and Cancún's HURDAT2 storm-track record shows zero tropical storm or hurricane days in January going back to 1985, this is as safe a weather bet as the Yucatán gets.

Sargassum, the brown seaweed that piles up on Caribbean-facing beaches some years, is typically at its lowest levels of the year in January. If a sargassum-free beach matters to your trip, this is one of the better months to book without worrying about it.

It's a strong month for day trips: dry roads and mild temperatures make the two-hour drive to Chichen Itza comfortable, and the reef systems off Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos are calm enough for good snorkeling most days. Cozumel's dive sites, a short ferry-and-boat connection away, are also in excellent shape this time of year.

Whale sharks, Cancún's biggest wildlife draw, aren't in season yet, that run is mid-May through September, so January visitors trade that specific experience for calmer seas and clearer dry-season light, which is arguably better for underwater photography on the reef itself. January instead falls squarely in Cancún's sailfish season, which runs roughly December through March and draws serious sportfishing charters out of the hotel zone marina chasing some of the fastest fish in the ocean.

Hotel zone rooms book up early and command their highest rates of the year in January; travelers on a tighter budget do well looking at El Centro (downtown Cancún), a short bus or taxi ride from the beach with noticeably cheaper food and lodging, or basing on Isla Mujeres for a quieter, more local feel with an easy ferry connection back to the mainland attractions.

Compared to February and March, January's nights run slightly cooler and its dry-season crowds are already near their winter peak, so if budget matters more than avoiding a chilly evening, late February tends to offer similar dry weather without quite the same holiday-adjacent pricing.

Pack for warm days and cool evenings: swimwear and light clothing for daytime, a light sweater or wrap for dinner, and don't skip the reef-safe sunscreen, the sun is strong even with the milder air temperature.
