Cabo San Lucas Weather in January

January puts Cabo San Lucas squarely in its dry desert winter: highs of 77°F, lows near 63°F, and under one rain day for the entire month on average. This is about as reliably dry as any destination on this site gets.

Humidity is low at 63%, so even midday heat stays comfortable, and evenings genuinely cool off, pack a light layer for dinner on the marina or in downtown San José del Cabo.

Sea temperature is a cooler 73.4°F, noticeably chillier than Caribbean destinations at the same time of year; swimming is still pleasant, especially on the calmer Sea of Cortez side, but it's a different feel than Cancún or Punta Cana's bathtub-warm water.

January is the real headline month for humpback whale watching in Cabo, the whales arrive from their North Pacific feeding grounds to breed and calve in the warmer waters around the Baja peninsula, and sightings from boat tours (and sometimes from shore) become a daily occurrence through the winter season.

No hurricane or tropical storm activity has been recorded in January historically for this coast, hurricane season here runs roughly June through November, so winter is entirely outside the risk window.

Unlike Cancún or Punta Cana, Cabo has no sargassum problem at all, it's a Pacific-facing desert coast, not exposed to the Atlantic currents that carry the seaweed onto Caribbean beaches.

January is also peak season for Cabo's golf courses, with mild temperatures and minimal rain making it one of the most comfortable months of the year to play a full round without the summer heat.

This is high season, so book resorts along the Corridor (the stretch between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo) and whale-watching tours well in advance; the marina area in downtown Cabo gets genuinely busy with cruise ship passengers and land-based visitors alike.

The Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula stays notably calmer for swimming than the open Pacific side, where surf and undertow can be strong, stick to Medano Beach or a Corridor resort's protected cove if calm water is the priority.

Pack layers: warm days call for light clothing, but January evenings and early mornings run cool enough that a jacket or sweater is genuinely useful, unlike Cabo's scorching summer.
