Cancún Weather in May

May marks the shift into Cancún's wet season: rain days jump to 12.1, humidity climbs to 77%, and highs push past 84°F. It's still a genuinely good beach month, just with a noticeably different feel from the bone-dry winter and spring stretch.

Most May rain still comes as afternoon or evening showers rather than all-day systems, so mornings are frequently clear, a pattern that holds through most of the wet season here.

The sea reaches 83.9°F, among the warmest of the year, and swimming, snorkeling and diving conditions remain excellent.

May sits in a genuine value window: spring break is long over, summer family travel hasn't started, and rates tend to be lower than the winter high season for weather that's still mostly dry.

This is also, realistically, the start of sargassum season on the Caribbean-facing beaches of the hotel zone, some years see heavy accumulation by mid-to-late May, others stay relatively clear. Check current beach reports if a sargassum-free stretch of sand is a priority.

Hurricane season officially begins June 1, so May remains outside the historical risk window, though the shift toward wetter, more unsettled weather is already underway.

May is also, notably, when whale shark season near Isla Mujeris and Holbox typically begins, these gentle filter-feeding giants gather in huge numbers in the waters north of Cancún from roughly mid-May through September, and dedicated snorkel tours run daily through the peak. It's the single biggest wildlife draw of the year for this coast.

For travelers weighing sargassum against whale sharks, May is genuinely the transition month for both, early May tends to have less seaweed than late May, and the whale shark season is just getting underway rather than at its peak, which arrives more in June and July.

Whale shark tours depart early in the morning from Isla Mujeres, Puerto Juárez or the hotel zone marina and run 4-6 hours round trip with a permitted operator, book directly with a licensed tour company, since the whale shark biosphere reserve strictly regulates boat numbers and snorkeler conduct around the animals.

May also opens dorado (mahi-mahi) season in Yucatán waters, running roughly through September, giving sportfishing charters a strong alternative once sailfish season winds down at the end of March.

Compared to April, May trades meaningfully drier weather for the start of whale shark season and generally softer rates, a fair trade if wildlife or budget matters more than guaranteed dry skies.
