Cancún Weather in March

March is Cancún's driest month on record: just 6.8 rain days on average, humidity down to 72%, and highs of 80.9°F under mostly clear skies. If low rain risk is your top priority, March edges out even January and February.

It's also spring break month, and Cancún is one of the most famous spring break destinations in North America, expect the hotel zone to be loud, packed, and priced accordingly from roughly mid-March through early April, especially around US college spring break weeks.

Sea temperature starts its climb back up, averaging 81.2°F, comfortable and trending warmer as the month goes on. Reef conditions remain excellent for snorkeling and diving, continuing the dry season's clear-water streak.

If spring break energy isn't what you're after, the first two weeks of March (before most US schools break) are noticeably calmer than the back half, with similar weather and lower rates.

No tropical storm or hurricane activity has been recorded in March historically, hurricane season doesn't start until June, so this remains a weather-safe month regardless of the spring break crowds.

Sargassum is typically still minimal in March, though watch year-specific reports if you're booking a beach-focused stay; conditions can shift faster than the historical average suggests in a heavy sargassum year.

March 20 or 21 brings a genuinely unique reason to visit Chichen Itza specifically: the spring equinox, when the setting sun creates a shadow effect on El Castillo pyramid that looks like a serpent descending the staircase, a real, weather-independent draw that pulls crowds to the ruins around that exact date.

This is also good timing for Isla Mujeres and Cozumel day trips, with calm seas making the ferry crossings smooth and dive visibility still benefiting from the dry season's low runoff. Sailfish season is still active through March, its final month before tapering off into spring.

If you're not chasing the spring break scene, base yourself away from the hotel zone's most concentrated party strip, the southern hotel zone, Isla Mujeres, or a downtown El Centro stay all offer the same dry-season weather with far less noise and a lower nightly rate, since the peak spring break premium is concentrated on a specific run of beachfront properties.

Compared to the quieter shoulder months on either side, March's spring break crowd is the defining factor, the weather itself is arguably the best of the entire year, so the tradeoff is purely about noise, nightlife, and pricing rather than conditions.

Pack light layers for daytime, something for a pool party or nightlife scene if that's your trip, and sun protection, the UV index climbs fast this time of year even though the air doesn't feel as hot as summer.
