Cancún Weather in December

December closes the year back in dry-season conditions: highs of 79°F, just 11.2 rain days, humidity down to 75%, and zero recorded hurricane activity historically, a clean return to Cancún's most reliable weather stretch.

Nights cool to 73°F, a welcome break after the muggy summer, and this is one of the more comfortable months for daytime sightseeing away from the beach.

The sea holds at 82.4°F, still very swimmable even as it cools from its autumn peak.

December is peak season and priced like it, especially around Christmas and New Year's, the two weeks bracketing the holidays are the single most expensive and crowded stretch of the entire year on the hotel zone.

Booking hotel-zone rooms, restaurant reservations and day trips (Chichen Itza, Isla Mujeres, Xcaret) well in advance is essential for the holiday weeks specifically; the first half of December, before the rush, is noticeably calmer for similar weather.

Sargassum is typically at its lowest annual levels in December, making this one of the more reliable months for a clean, seaweed-free beach.

Wildlife-wise, whale sharks are long gone for the year by December, but this is roughly when the dry season's calm, clear conditions return for reliably good reef diving and snorkeling off Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, a fair trade for travelers prioritizing underwater visibility over any single signature event.

Early December, before roughly the 20th, is genuinely the sweet spot of the month: dry-season weather without the holiday-week surcharge or the elbow-to-elbow hotel zone crowds that arrive with Christmas week.

Sailfish season resumes in December and runs through March, giving anglers another shot at Cancún's signature sportfishing scene right as the water and sky settle back into their calmest, clearest dry-season pattern.

If you're traveling over Christmas or New Year's specifically, book flights, hotel-zone rooms and airport transfers at least two to three months out, private transfers are worth the extra cost given how much holiday traffic backs up the highway between the airport and the hotel zone, and resorts' New Year's Eve packages sell out early.
